LED strips are a popular and versatile light source used both indoors and outdoors. One of the key factors when choosing an LED strip is its level of environmental protection, which is indicated by the IP (Ingress Protection) index. This index shows the level of protection against dust and moisture, which is especially important when using LED strips in different environments. In this article, we will look at the protection classes of LED strips, how they are classified, and what to pay attention to when choosing LED strips for specific conditions of use.

Our showroom has a wide selection of professional LED strips to meet the most diverse needs of our customers. We understand how important it is to choose the right LED strip, especially when it comes to using it in different environments. That's why we offer products with different protection classes (IP) so that you can find the most suitable solution for your project.

Mis on IP-indeks?

The IP index consists of two numbers. The first number indicates the level of protection against solid particles (dust and other small particles) and the second number indicates the level of protection against moisture (water, condensation, etc.). The higher the number, the higher the degree of protection.

Values of the first digit of the IP:

0 - no protection.

1 - protection against solid objects larger than 50 mm (e.g. accidental hand touch).

2 - protection against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm (eg fingers).

3 - protection against solid objects larger than 2.5 mm (eg tools and wires).

4 - protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm (eg small wires and screws).

5 - partial protection against dust, its intrusion does not disturb the device.

6 - Complete dust protection.

Values of the second IP digit:

0 - no protection.

1 - protection against vertically falling water drops.

2 - protection against drops of water falling at an angle of up to 15°.

3 - protection against splashing water falling at an angle of up to 60°.

4 - protection against splashing water from all directions.

5 - protection against jets of water coming from all directions.

6 - protection against strong water jets or waves.

7 - protection for short-term immersion in water up to 1 meter deep.

8 - protection in case of prolonged immersion in water at a depth of more than 1 meter.

Protection classes of LED strips

Now let's look at the most common protection classes of LED strips and what conditions they are suitable for.

IP20: This LED strip has basic protection against solid objects larger than 12.5mm and no protection against moisture. These strips are suitable for indoor use where there is no risk of contact with water and dust, e.g. lighting furniture, shop windows and decorative lighting.

IP65: LED strips are protected against dust and water jets. They can withstand dust and rain, but we strongly do not recommend using them in humid environments or outdoor conditions, because only the diodes are covered with silicone and the back of the metal plate is not protected in any way, and exposure to moisture can oxidize the strips and become unusable.

IP67: LED strips are completely dustproof and withstand short-term immersion in water. They are ideal for outdoor use, where there is high humidity and possible contact with water, such as pools and fountains.

IP68: LED strips that are maximally protected against dust and prolonged immersion in water. These strips are designed for use in the most demanding environments where a high level of protection against moisture is required, such as underwater lighting. They differ from IP67 bands in that IP68 bands are completely filled with silicone on the inside, while IP67 bands are hollow on the inside.

How to choose an LED strip with the right protection class?

When choosing an LED strip, the following factors should be considered:

  • Installation location: indoor or outdoor? In a high humidity or dry environment?
  • Conditions of use: Is the tape exposed to mechanical stress, dust or water?
  • Aesthetic requirements: How does the bar look indoors or outdoors?

Choosing the right protection class (IP) for an LED strip ensures its durability and performance in specific environments. Understanding the IP class and its values will help you make an informed choice, ensuring that your LED strip performs reliably in any environment.
