What is a power supply unit?

A power supply unit for LED strips is a device designed to power LED strips. It converts the electrical current from an AC or DC source into a form suitable for the operation of LEDs.

When choosing a power source for an LED strip, you need to consider several basic parameters:

Voltage

The power supply must provide a voltage that meets the requirements for the LED strip indicated on the package. The most common voltages for LED strips are 12 and 24 V, less often 5 and 36 V and others.

Power

The power supply must have enough power to power the LED strips. It is usually indicated in watts (W).

The following formula is used to calculate the power of the required power supply: Power of the power supply (W) = power consumed by one meter of LED strip (W/m) * length of the LED strip (m) + 20% (power reserve).

Connection type

Make sure that the type of connection (such as plug or wire) of the power supply meets your needs and requirements.

Enclosure density (IP)

When choosing a power source for the LED strip, it is necessary to analyze the conditions of its use, taking into account dust and moisture protection. In normal dry rooms with normal air humidity, IP20 protection is sufficient, which prevents the penetration of solid particles over 12.5 mm.

In the case of LED strips installed in bathrooms, it is necessary to ensure complete protection against moisture with IP65 class. This level of protection excludes water jets and dust.

For outdoor use, a maximum IP67 classification is recommended, allowing temporary submersion in water up to 1 meter deep. IP68 and IP69 allow continuous immersion in water.

Dimming

If you intend to dim the backlight using a wall switch, dimmable power supplies are available. In this case, it is important that the power supply is compatible with your switch and vice versa.

Choosing the location of the power supply unit

When choosing the placement of the power supply, it is worth considering that the larger the power supply of the LED strips, the larger its size, and therefore more space is required to install it, due to increased heat dissipation. For more powerful models, it is extremely important to ensure sufficient space for efficient heat dissipation. Otherwise, the device may overheat, which will negatively affect its service life.

When installing an LED strip power supply, it is important to ensure that it is available for maintenance or replacement if necessary. It is recommended to install the power supply in such a place that is easily accessible and whose removal or replacement does not require complicated manipulations.

As you can see, choosing and calculating the power supply for the LED strip is not very difficult if you know the characteristics of the LED strip and the conditions of its use.

A correctly selected and installed power supply unit ensures long-term and uninterrupted operation of the LED lighting system, reducing the risk of breakdowns and ensuring comfort and safety in use.
