Choosing a color temperature, or what are kelvins?

You will certainly often find parameters marked with the letter K on the packaging in the store, for example 3000K, but what is this parameter and how to choose the right one for your room?

Now we're going to help you figure it out.

What is kelvins?

The color temperature of the light flux emitted from the light source is measured in kelvins. It represents the range of radiation visible to the human eye. This range includes shades of white light, which determine the comfort level of room lighting and which each person perceives individually. As we wrote above, manufacturers of LED products indicate this parameter on the packaging.

In general, all light sources are divided into three main groups according to color temperature:

  • Warm white (2700-3500K)
  • Neutral white or daylight (3500-5300 K)
  • Cold white (above 5300 K)

The color temperature of a standard incandescent lamp is around 2800K, so the warm white glow of LED lamps is the most familiar to the eye (2700 to 3500K).

Usage

So which temperature should you choose?

2700-3500К: Warm white

This shade is reminiscent of glowing light and soft sunlight. It does not annoy or irritate, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere. Perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, libraries, restaurants and cafes. In an apartment, it is particularly suitable for bedrooms and spot lighting.

3500-5300К: Neutral white or daylight

Increases performance and is ideal for workplaces. This comfortable daylight is suitable for lighting work surfaces, offices, cabinets and living spaces.

5300K and above: Cold white

It is a characteristic light blue or blue color. It is used in warehouses, utility rooms and production rooms with a minimum presence, as well as in shops, hospitals, museums, galleries.

Important: the color temperature of the same lamp can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, even if the same numerical value is given.

For example, if a manufacturer (A) states on the package that the light temperature of the lamp is 3000K, and another manufacturer (B) claims the same - they may differ, i.e. one bulb gives a warmer (yellow) light than the other.

Therefore, we recommend choosing products from the same manufacturer for one room, especially if several light sources are installed. This is especially true for LED strips. If you are going to install a large number of strips, make sure they are from the same batch, otherwise you risk having very different colored strips and the project will go to waste.

How color temperature affects people

Warm light that creates a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. It promotes a feeling of warmth and comfort, which favorably affects a person's emotional state.

It can also stimulate the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep and promotes relaxation. Therefore, using a warm light in the evening or before bed can help you relax and prepare for sleep.

Neutral light, on the other hand, supports alertness and ability to work. This is especially valuable during the day when you need to be more active and focused.

Cold light, on the contrary, enlivens and stimulates our mood and energy. It can activate hormones, including serotonin, which are associated with increased mood and energy. Therefore, it is often used in shopping malls.

It is important to note that the effect of the color temperature of the light on the emotional state can be individual.

In addition, the color temperature of the light may vary depending on the specific situation. Because, for example, cool light may be more appropriate for a workspace where concentration is required, while warm light may be preferred for a bedroom or relaxation area.

Thus, we can conclude from all of the above that understanding color temperature and its impact on our environment is one of the key elements in the selection and installation of lighting. Each color temperature has its own characteristics and can be used effectively in different scenarios. The concept of Kelvin allows us to quantify this quality of lighting and make informed decisions when planning indoor or outdoor lighting. By taking into account the individual preferences, functional needs and atmospheric characteristics of each room, we can create spaces that are not only visually pleasing, but also have a beneficial effect on our mood and productivity.
